The House Of The Lord
Now David said, “Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all countries. I will now make preparation for it.” So David made abundant preparations before his death. 1 Chronicles 22:5
When you make God the number one priority in your life, His house becomes the first house you consider. All your decision-making and everything you want to do should always feature His house in the equation of your consideration. David loved God so much that he wanted to build God a great temple. While God can never be contained in an edifice of brick and mortar, He nonetheless inhabits the building His people lovingly construct for Him. The temple is the earthly manifestation of God’s goodness and greatness. It is the clearest sign of the type of God He is in a community. David says, “The house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnifi cent, famous and glorious throughout all countries” (1 Chr. 22:5). It has to be awe-inspiring. It mustn’t be something shabby lest people in the community think less highly of the God we serve. No expense was spared in building the temple. The highest point of the temple was 20-storey high.
Many parts were overlaid with pure gold. Some 3,300 officials were appointed to oversee the temple’s construction. Someone estimated that if each laborer was paid just US$1.00 a day, this temple would have cost US$28 billion. The temple was so magnifi cent that when the Queen of Sheba saw it, she was left totally breathless (1 Kin. 10:4-5). David prepared the building materials in such abundance that the stones, wood and iron were “beyond measure” (1 Chr. 22:14). The gold, silver and bronze had “no limit” (22:16). Out of his own personal account, David gave anywhere from US$2 billion to US$5 billion for the construction of the temple. Such was his love for God’s house that by personal example and public exhortation, he challenged his people to give generously and substantially to the building work. David then encouraged His people as they got ready to “arise and build” (22:19):
(1) Remember who God is. David reminded them: “Is not the LORD your God with you?” (22:18).
(2) Remember what God has done. David reminded them: “And has He not given you rest on every side? For He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land is subdued before the LORD and before His people” (22:18).
(3) Pray to God for the way to contribute. David said, “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God” (22:19). If you would do the same three things, the Holy Spirit will start leading you to give and contribute to the church’s Arise & Build program.
