Faithful Men

And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:2

The Bible says, “Commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” The error we often make is to “commit these to able men who will be faithful to teach.” It is important for us to know that God commits to character, not talent. This error we make is the basis for problems we find in businesses, in churches and in marriages. It is common for us to be impressed with men of charisma, talents and abilities. As a result, we make the mistake of committing responsibilities to a novice instead of a man with proven character (1 Tim. 3:1-7).

Faithfulness is the cornerstone of character. Not only does Scripture affirm that God is faithful (Deut. 7:9), but it declares that Christ “was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house” (Heb. 3:2). Scripture is emphatic in referring to Jesus Christ as the faithful One. He was constant, loyal, and submitted to the work and will of His heavenly Father.

There are at least three elemental ingredients in faithfulness: constancy, loyalty and submission; all of which Jesus exhibited fully during His earthly ministry. Constancy means being steadfast, never varying, continually recurring. Christ Himself was constant in obeying and carrying out the Father’s will.

Loyalty is the state of being firmly attached to someone or something by affection, sympathy, self-interest, or commonality. Loyal men are not secret-tellers (Prov. 11:13). Their confidentiality is uncompromising. They are quick to stand for the cause or person to which they are loyal to. Submission is willingly yielding, giving, or offering oneself to an authority. So in what areas must one be found faithful? In Luke 16:10-12, Jesus specifically mentioned three areas:

(1) Be faithful in what is least;

(2) Be faithful in unrighteous mammon; and

(3) Be faithful in what is another man’s. Your faithfulness qualifies you for greater things. Jesus says, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.” Decide today to be a faithful person. God’s eyes are running to and fro throughout the earth to find a man or a woman whose heart is loyal, faithful and committed to Him (2 Chr. 16:9).
