Hope In God
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. Psalm 42:5
We live in a time of great challenges and uncertainty. Jesus says it plainly in John 16:33 that in this world, we will have tribulation. So how do we stay positive and live a victorious Christian life, despite all the pressures and stress? The answer is to have “hope in God.” In fact, Paul instructs us in 1 Thessalonians 5: 8 to put on “as a helmet the hope of salvation,” in order to stand strong in the last days.
Many people in the world do not have very positive hopes for their life. They live day to day without much hope about their life and future. This should never be the case for you. About 300 years ago in England, there was a very poor woman by the name of Susanna. She had 19 children, of which 9 died because of the harsh living conditions of her days. However, Susanna made a decision to put her hope in Jesus and every week, she would minister to the remaining 10 children and put hope into their hearts. Susanna could have been a very defeated and depressed woman. But she decided to wear the helmet, the hope of salvation, on her mind; and position herself for better things to come! Susanna Wesley became the mother of two very famous men: John and Charles Wesley. John Wesley went on to become the founder of the Methodist Church. He preached more than 45,000 sermons, traveled on horseback, and covered distances equivalent to nine times around the earth. He also wrote a total of 233 books. Charles Wesley on the other hand, composed more than 6,500 hymns in his lifetime.
These were people who refused to be pessimistic with life! You can be like them! Instead of going to bed every night sulking and feeling sorry for yourself, you can wake up every morning shouting: “This is the day of my victory in Christ!” The word “hope” in Greek is elpis, which means to anticipate, usually with pleasure. Hope is of the mind and has to do with the future. And God wants us to know that He has prepared a wonderful future for us (Jer. 29: 11). God is working out all things for your good (Rom. 8:28). Therefore, don’t keep talking about the storm; you must speak to the storm! Be an optimist. Cultivate a positive mental attitude of hope which is a confi dent expectation of good in every situation.
The late Dr. Edwin Louis Cole once said: “The most powerful thing a man can do for himself is to create an image.” Decide today you are going to put your hope in God. You will create an image of the future that is bright and glorious in Christ Jesus.
